Download festival 2010, Day two.
67Hi every one, if you reading this then you are about to read how day 2 went for me at Download festival 2010, I have also written a hub called 'Download festival, Day one', day one for me was all about getting to the festival, finding a spot for my tent and checking out what was a new festival site for me and enjoying ACDC, Friday was a good day but Saturday and Sunday were better as I at the festival and just had to get out of my tent to enjoy it.
I was woken up really early by the aeroplane's that fly out out of the East Midlands Airport which is about 2 miles away from the festival site, mind you, I didn't really have a great night's sleep the first night because of all the different noises that can be heard coming from the campsites, the noise eventually dies right down about 4am by which time most people are fast asleep but there are always loads of others that are still up drinking to their hearts content or wondering around the campsites in a daze.
I was awoken around 5:30am and lay there for a while but then decided to get up and have a walk back to my car to collect my spare mobile phone, I had lost my other phone Friday night ten minutes into ACDC when the crowd pushed forward, I was concerned that it had been found and that a huge bill had been run up on it as it was a contract phone, but then I thought that it had been crushed under the feet of those at the front, either way I wanted to get it cancelled just in case so I took a stroll to my car miles away and then went off to the market place where there was a lost property tent, I enquired about my phone but it had not been handed in so I decided to go back to my tent have a spliff and try and get my head down for a few more hours as it was only 6:30am by then.
I managed to drop off again until about 9am when I awoke to the sound of my neighbours chatting away, it was then that I realised that I had invaded their space by pitching my tent in between their 2 tents, how bad did I feel but I thought 'oh well', I eventually got up about 10am and decided to go for a wonder to lost property again to see if my phone had been handed in but it hadn't and I managed to get it cancelled, I then went for a proper look around the whole of the festival which took up some of the morning, there weren't any bands that I wanted to see early in the day that day so I made my way back to my tent to have a few beers and get ready for the rest of the day in the main arena.
On my way back I forgot to hide my weed and as I was going out had my bags checked, they discovered my weed and took it off my which left me pretty annoyed to say the least, I made it back to my tent and reviewed my situation, I had lost my phone and now had my weed taken off me, the sandwiches that I'd bought with me were looking a bit dodgy but the beer was staying cool although it was slightly warm, I had about £30 on me that I was reluctant to spend as everything was so expensive but then I suddenly remembered something that changed my whole weekend.
I prepared myself to go back to the arena and had about 4 cans of bud by the time I was back in the arena, I noticed that a lot of people were going around collecting empty beer cups that were laying all over the festival ground and I remember reading something on the Download festival website about the collecting of these cups but had forgotten what I had read, so I picked up about 3 or 4 and went to the nearest festival official or marshall and enquired on where I take them and what I got in return for them, he showed me where to take them and informed me that I would be paid 10p for every one I collected, as soon as I knew this I was on a mission, Lamb of God had just started playing at the main stage and I watched them for a short while but didn't like them, they were a bit too heavy for me so I went collecting cups for next hour or so.
It was a fantastically hot day and within the first two hours I had made £18 most of which went on beer, when Megadeth came on I was still collecting my beer cups but also having a great time, I would weave in and out of the crowd getting right up front collecting beer cups all the way, I thought to myself 'this is great I'm having a great time, making some money and getting to see some fantastic bands at the same time.
After making £18 I bought a beer and had a sit down in the hot sun and relaxed for a bit, the next thing on my mind was getting hold of some weed, next to where I had decided to sit down was girl skinning up so I asked if I could buy a spliff off her and she very kindly offered to give me the one that she had just made for nothing, I insisted on paying her whatever loose change was in my pocket and handed her £1:60, happy as Larry I sat down in the hot sun with a beer in one hand and spliff in the other, Megadeth were just coming to the end of their set so I chilled out for the next half hour and listened to them.
After about half an hour I moved to what I thought was a great spot to see Rage against the machine, as I lay there in the sun Megadeth finished their set and I was suddenly engulfed by a sea of people, I didn't mind at first because I was now feeling the effects of the spliff I'd just had and was easily amused, but then it felt as though everyone was looking at me for some reason, I stayed put for a while longer starting to feel a bit uncomfortable and decided to check my money, now I knew I still had a £5 note and a pound coin, as I was checking I started to panic on not being able to find the pound coin but suddenly I spotted this shiny one pound coin laying right on the floor next me.
At this point I had a fit of giggles realising 'that's why everyone was looking at me', they could see this shiny one pound coin right on the floor next to me, which at the time I was oblivious to because I was stoned, and they couldn't get to it.
I didn't really fancy watching the Deftones so I decided to go and collect more beer cups and off I went, I made about another £24 that day, I was up by the stage in amongst the crowd collecting cups all through the Deftones but didn't really listen to them at all and I almost did the same When Rage against the Machine were on, I think by then I was a little bit too focused on collecting beer cups and didn't realise RATM were on, I was also feeling slightly drunk as well but when I finally came to my senses and realised RATM were playing I stopped what I was doing and enjoyed the show.
It is the first time that I have seen RATM, I wish I had watched them from beginning to end because what I did see of them was amazing, I would even go so far as to say they were better than ACDC but in fairness they are 2 different bands from different era's, RATM played a brilliant set and really got the crowd going, they played all their best songs, Testify, Killing in the name of, Know your enemy, Freedom, Guerilla radio and Sleep now in the fire, the day had been brilliant for everyone that was there, the weather was perfect and so was the mood and Rage Against the Machine were just the perfect end to a perfect day.
I didn't watch RATM right till the end which I regret, I had collected loads of beer cups and wanted to cash them in before the end, unfortunately the tent that pays out had closed for the evening but I had £18 worth of beer cups to cash in next day, apart from the 4 cans of my own beer that I had drank that day and £7.50 that I had spent of my own money on 2 beer tokens the rest of the beer was free and I think I had at least another 6 beers that day.
When RATM had finished and everyone was leaving I was still milling around the main arena trying to find something to eat as I was getting fed up with cheese an ham sandwiches, I still had 2 loaves of them left but was worried they were not edible by now and would need disposing of, the upside was that I now had money for my beer and food so I found what looked like a decent burger bar and ordered a half pounder burger, most of Saturday I had been eating ham sandwiches so when that big fat greasy burger touched my lips I was tasting heaven, that burger was so lovely I relished every bite.
After that I left the arena along with everyone else and made the long journey back to my tent stopping off at one of the stores that sells cigarettes to by a fresh pack before finally getting back to my tent where feeling much happier after the events of the day had a few beers and dozed off.
All in all Saturday turned out to be fantastic day with great weather and great bands, everyone was in such a great mood the beer was flowing and there were lots of pretty ladies at the festival raising spirits even more, when I got back to my tent I was feeling pretty knackered from all the walking throughout the day but also because of the heat and the beer I'd drank so I had no problems dropping of that second night and even had a good nights sleep to.
Catch up with me again tomorrow and read about how Sunday went, Sunday was the best day for me in more ways than one so be prepared for what may turn out to be a long hub with some great photo's.
